Auditions for 2022 Season!

Our Season

Our Artistic Director, Deirdre Kellermanis excited to launch Tone Cluster’s 2021-22 season with a fabulous virtual concert: VOCALISE!

VOCALISE minimal text. maximum sound will stream online January 3-17, 2022.

The voice is a powerful tool. It can be guttural, evocative, sensual, angry, and joyful.

As we get back to singing, we'll explore the range and boundaries of the human voice, and how to communicate with minimal text. Our concert season will continue with concerts in March and June 2022.

Plus, the always fabulous Showtune ShowdownTM will be back on April 23rd, 2022 hopefully for a live audience!

See our Members page for information about rehearsals, dues, and volunteer duties.

New Board of Directors

Recently, Tone Cluster-quite a queer choir elected a new Board of Directors with an exciting year planned.

Our choristers are back making music again, both in-person and virtually, with the Board’s COVID-19 Committee carefully managing our move to a hybrid season.  Our first concert will be virtual, and subject to public health guidelines, we are hoping to be back to some in person performances in the new year.

In addition to navigating COVID, the new Board will be focusing their efforts on equity and belonging initiatives, policy and governance, financial management, membership liaison, community development, and special projects such as Unison in Halifax.

The 2021/2022 Board:

Chair: Colum Grove-White
Treasurer: Jan Andrews
Secretary / Membership Coordinator: Marie-Elyse Gilbert
Members at Large: Roger Butt, Keith Duncanson, Maddy Cowdell

Tone Cluster’s Exceptional Year

This has been an exceptional year in Tone Cluster’s history in so many ways.  For our 27th season, we adapted how we make music together by rehearsing and meeting online, and presented a full year of virtual performances.  The results are in and we’re thrilled to announce that we reached an amazing milestone of nearly 13,000 views for all of our virtual activities this past season. Incredible!

And we can top this impressive number with the recordings of Make Peace With It, featuring singer-songwriter Jadea Kelly and All of Who I Am now back online and available to view on our YouTube Channel, along with video clips from our other virtual concerts from this past season.

Shout outs to our Artistic Director, Deirdre Kellerman and Accompanist, Tim Piper, our hard-working Board of Directors and volunteers, all of our wonderful choristers, sponsors and donors, and heartfelt thanks to all of you for watching our virtual shows.

Tone Cluster – quite a queer choir looks forward to sharing with you the programming planned for the 2021-2022 season, and in the meantime, hope you’ll enjoy some sweet snippets of the past year.

Tone Cluster Celebrates as Deirdre Kellerman becomes its new Artistic Director

deirdre kellerman

Deirdre has led our choir through an exciting and highly successful season of virtual rehearsals and performances, with close to 12,000 views of our virtual recordings, concerts and Show Tune Showdown TM. Our virtual shows have received rave reviews and we now have fans in such faraway places as Denmark and Japan.

Under Deirdre’s expert guidance, 35 choristers have learned how to rehearse on Zoom, record their own audio and video recordings and celebrate together as we watch the final product. We are all thrilled to know that Deirdre will be leading us in the years ahead as we pivot towards in-person concerts again when health guidelines allow.

Deirdre Kellerman is a highly respected choral conductor and vocal coach based in Ottawa. In addition to Tone Cluster, Deirdre is also the Artistic Director of Hypatia’s Voice Women’s Choir. She was a nominee for the 2018 Leslie Bell Prize for Choral Conducting, and in 2018, was one of five international conductors accepted into Banff Centre’s Inaugural Choral Art program.

This announcement comes just as the choir wraps up its current season with its final concert Make Peace With It now streaming for two weeks only on Tone Cluster’s youtube channel.

The choir looks forward to sharing with you the programming Deirdre has planned for the 2021-2022 season in the coming weeks so stay tuned.

Welcome to Tone Cluster – quite a queer choir

Tone Cluster is a 35-voice auditioned choir for queer people and their allies based in Canada’s capital city, Ottawa, Ontario. We pride ourselves on creating a queer-positive environment where singers can be themselves while striving for choral excellence.

Our core values include creativity, fun, excellence, a caring community, diversity and spirit. Our repertoire reflects our values and is wide-ranging and eclectic, from madrigals to Manhattan Transfer arrangements by way of world music and contemporary Canadiana. The choir also performs original choral works commissioned by the choir from Canadian composers.

Tone Cluster is a proud “out” choir! We make sure that our audiences are aware of our point of view when we sing… and we trust that you, as a queer singer or straight ally, are proud to support a queer choir.

Although the COVID-19 situation has forced us into a virtual environment for the time being, check out Our Season page regularly for updates on our planned virtual activities.
